BUYER & CELLAR
Written by Jonathan Tolins
Directed by Dimitri Toscas
FANTASTIC!!!!! AMAZING!!!!! HYSTERICALLY FUNNY!!!!! And every other positive adjective you can think of.
BUYER & CELLAR is a winner as the second production in the Falcon Theatre’s 2016-2017 Season. Expertly written by Jonathan Tolins, performed by the remarkable Jai Rodriguez, and directed by the talented Dimitri Toscas, we are transported into Barbra Streisand’s cellar in her Malibu home, and a mall-like setting every woman would dream of.
Now I know this may sound like a very unlikely storyline, and yes, you would be right. However, Jonathan Tolins’ creative and imaginative mind was inspired by Ms Streisands 2010 coffee table book, “My Passion For Design”. Pulling bits and pieces from this book, Tolins has given us a story where we are privy to Barbra’s need for perfection and good taste. but more importantly, why she needed it. We are treated to a comedy, with many touching moments, where every nuance is expressed by Jai Rodriguez’ truly wonderful performance.
Out of work actor, Alex More (Jai Rodriguez) needs a job, and is sent to a mysterious house in Malibu to interview. Now, Alex is the narrator in our story and in this unusual setting, and is also the main character of our play. He can’t believe his luck when he is hired to work in her “Mall”, and in doing so, becomes friends with the star. Or so he thinks. Alex’ boyfriend, Barry, also narrated by Alex, is not as supportive of what seems to be the perfect opportunity for Alex.
Dimitri Toscas’ direction is superb. The set is throughful and creative, lighting, projections, props all add to the play. Everything about this play WORKS!
BUYER & CELLAR is an unusual story, and a breath of “fresh air” creativity. It is a MUST SEE! I loved it. But I guess you could tell that, couldn’t you.
Enjoy!!!!!!!!! I know I did. In fact, I could see this one again.
