The Write Act Repertory Presents “Summer Shorts”

A short run of short plays…

This is an excellent example of how a collection of short plays, written by the same playwright, can be as varied and disparate as a plays written by a collective.  Susan C. Hunter is a phenomenal writer.  She has given us a sublime slice of her writer's mind with a selection of plays with subjects as varied as the treacherous world of online dating, the pressures to lift one's face, dodgy prenups, and all hilarious and then a darker turn.  A dustbowl mother to ghostly children, women who lived with the enemy unknowingly repeating their patterns of pain, and a sweetly hopeful encounter between a widow and a mailman.

I love short plays.  It’s such an opportunity to cover subjects often overlooked. 

Things we can say with a look, or a poem or by the playing of a favorite 45.  Short plays are sweet glimpses of a story and, with the right actors, they can resonate as deeply as any three-act play can. 

These actors are just so perfectly cast, they all play numerous roles and do so absolutely effortlessly. Brilliantly becoming these funny, clever, sometimes sad and moving characters, full of the intimate and strange imaginings of this writer's mind.

It’s only on for another weekend, in the lovely Brickhouse Theatre in NoHo, so I urge you to see it.  Supporting short-form plays is as much a duty to the continuing creative art of the playwright as it is, at least for me, a distinct pleasure.  The Write Act Repertory always brings their audiences someone authentic, something moving and something entertaining…this production is no exception.  Bravo!
